Regional identity is the broad principle that I choose to work with. Our Mediterranean climate is less than 2% of the earth’s surface.

It is found in only five areas of the world; the Mediterranean basin itself, coastal Southern California, parts of southern and western Australia, central coastal Chile and the southwestern tip of South Africa. Consequently, it is a very special and unique place.

The site, the architecture of the house and the owners’ wishes are all considered to make it a comfortable fit with the regional identity.

That means using Mediterranean plants including California natives, which make it sustainable.

Though it’s not always a familiar concept for those who grew up in the other 98% of the planet, it results is a home that combines environmental responsibility and distictive beauty.
